A snapshot of Trinseo’s emissions reduction, and our Terneuzen site’s carbon bed used to reduce benzene and toluene emissions.

Trinseo reduced emissions from sources owned or controlled by the company by 25 percent since 2011, and by 7 percent since 2015. Since 2011, Trinseo has cut its VOC emissions in half.

Filtering with Carbon Beds in Terneuzen

At our styrene monomer plant in Terneuzen, the Netherlands, the team installed a carbon bed at the site's storage tank farm to reduce benzene and toluene emissions. In 2016, the carbon bed reduced the site's total emissions by approximately 11 percent and reduced benzene/toluene emissions by 86 percent.

The carbon bed works by adsorbing hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene) from the site’s storage tank vents, and then releasing clean nitrogen into the atmosphere.

One of the additional environmental advantages of using a carbon bed is that when the whole carbon bed (a drum that contains carbon) is saturated, the entire vessel is taken back to the supplier for regeneration.
