On November 8, 2017, final year students studying Industrial Chemistry at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) visited Trinseo’s polystyrene plant in Tsing Yi, Hong Kong. One goal of their course studies is to introduce chemistry students the important plastics and their related processing process. Trinseo’s employees at Tsing Yi Plant conducted a presentation on the Company’s corporate profile, its commitment to sustainability, and the history of the Plant before splitting the students into two groups for the site tour.
Professor To Ngai, Department of Chemistry, CUHK remarked after the visit, “We had the opportunity to visit Trinseo production site located in Tsing Yi. It was impressive to see that Hong Kong has such a world-class chemical plant which produces polystyrene. Before the visit, most students knew very little about Trinseo, although it has been operated in Tsing Yi for more than 40 years. After this implausible visit, my student’s eyes have been opened to the scale and complexity of industrial chemical facilities. This kind of activity is important to our chemistry students since it helps to relate their theoretical knowledge to real life industries.”
Visiting students proactively asked questions during the tour. As a global chemical materials solutions provider and a manufacturer of plastics, latex binders, and synthetic rubber, Trinseo employees are more than happy to do our part to inspire the next generation.
“During the visit, the group of students toured around our facilities where we introduced to them aspects such as the chemical processes, on-site process control units, and the built-in laboratory,” said Alfred Chan, Site Leader, Tsing Yi Plant. “As one of the few chemical plants in Hong Kong, it’s our pleasure to provide visualization of the chemical processes and understanding of the importance of sustainability in EH&S to the next generation of chemistry students.”
